Antler Travels: Cape Town, South Africa

At Antler, we don’t just talk about travel—we live it. Through our stories and guides, we celebrate the places that shape our legacy and inspire our journeys. Our Antler Travels series takes you deeper into the destinations that move us, guided by the experiences and recommendations of our team—travellers who’ve ventured far and wide.

The magic of a trip often lies in a place’s atmosphere—the unspoken vibe that photos can’t capture. Cape Town, the South African capital nestled in the shadow of Table Mountain, is one such place—a city where cosmopolitan energy meets breathtaking natural beauty. Cape Town offers a world of contrasts, from its vibrant streets and cultural hotspots to the expansive landscapes that feel like they stretch endlessly into the horizon.

We asked Antler’s Senior Social Creative Lead, Kat, to share her Cape Town story. Kat travelled to South Africa in 2024 to shoot Antler’s Icon Campaign.

Antler: What was the first thing you noticed?

KC: The first thing that hit me was the heat! We travelled in February which is one of the hottest months to visit South Africa. But then it was the stunning landscapes that instantly turned my head—the mountainous surroundings can be seen as soon as you leave the airport, and even the drive to our hotel was absolutely breathtaking. Everywhere you go, there is another stunning view to take in. The most lush mountains you’ve ever seen, nothing like anything we have in the UK.

What is your lasting memory of the place?

KC: My lasting memory of the trip was the amazingly kind people we met during our time there. We had the warmest welcome, literally! There was a lot to fit in, and people were so generous with their knowledge and expertise in the history, the culture, and natural surroundings of Cape Town.

Did anything surprise you about the place?

KC: I was surprised (and initially slightly terrified) to hear there were baboons who roamed around our Airbnb! We had to be careful to close our windows if we heard the neighbours sounding their vuvuzelas, but otherwise there was no disruption to our stay because of it. We were in safe hands!

What did you take with you?

KC: I took a lot of sun cream, a sunhat, and sunglasses to battle the heat and sunshine that my British skin isn’t used to. I also took my silk eye mask and earplugs for the flight, which have become my absolute essential for travelling anywhere. They also come in handy during the trip – you never know how noisy or bright the hotel might be and sleep is essential for making the most of a place.

If you were to go back, who would you bring with you?

KC: I would love to go back with my partner, as my anecdotes and photos just don’t do justice to the beauty of the place. It needs to be seen to be believed! When I go back, I’d love to explore more beaches, do some surfing, see some penguins and visit some of the famous vineyards as we didn’t have tonnes of down time while shooting our Icon campaign.
